Because of the fast pace of American life, many families can not eat together around the family table every evening. Many people have to be at work during the normal dinner hours.
For this reason, fast food restaurants have become very popular. These restaurants serve foods such as hamburgers, tacos, French fries. Fast-food restaurants are really fast. You don’t have to wait a minute or two for your food. They are also convenient. You may dress casually, and in some places you can even order from your car and drive away with your food without going to the restaurant. Finally, fast-food restaurants are inexpensive.
Fast food has its shortcoming, too. Most fast-food meals are not very healthy. They are often high in fat and cholesterol(胆固醇), and low in other important nutrients(营养). It is advisable not to eat too much those fast food.
Most American people______, so fast-food restaurants have become popular.
A:hate to dine with their family B:like fast food’very much C:don’t have enough time to eat dinner together with their family D:live on fast food

Flying the Hypert Skies ? ?A little airplane has given new meaning to the term "going hyper. " ? ?The Hyper-X recently broke the record for air-breathing jet planes when it traveled at a hypersonic speed of seven times the speed of sound. That’s about 5,000 miles per hour. At this speed, you’d get around the world -- flying along the equator (赤道) -- in less than 5 hours. ? ?The Hyper-X is an unmanned, experimental aircraft just 12 feet long. It achieves hypersonic (超音速的) speed using a special sort of engine known as a scramjet. It may sound like something from a comic book, but engineers have been experimenting with scramjets since the 1960s. ? ?For an engine to burn fuel and produce energy, it needs oxygen. A jet engine, like those on passenger airplanes, gets oxygen from the air. A rocket engine typically goes faster but has to carry its own supply of oxygen. A scramjet (紧急刹车) engine goes as fast as a rocket, but it doesn’t have to carry its own oxygen supply. A scramjet’s special design allows it to obtain oxygen from the air that flows through the engine. And it does so without letting the fast-moving air put out the combustion (燃烧) flames. However, a scramjet engine works properly only at speeds greater than five times the speed of sound. A booster rocket carried the Hyper-X to an altitude of about 100,000 feet for its test flight. The aircraft’s record-beating flight lasted just 11 seconds. Although the little plane’s self-powered flight lasted only 11 seconds, that brief journey on March 27 makes a major milestone on the way to a new breed of very fast airplanes, comments Werner J. A. Dahm of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In the future, engineers predict, airplanes equipped with scramjet engines could transport cargo quickly and cheaply to the brink of space. Such hypersonic jets could potentially carry passengers anywhere in the world in just a few hours. ? ?Out of the three experimental Hyper-X aircrafts built for NASA, only one is now left. The agency has plans for another 11-second hypersonic flight, this time at 10 times the speed of the sound. |

The Asian Flu Virus In 1957, a doctor in Singapore noticed that hospitals were treating an unusual number of influenza-like cases. Influenza is sometimes called "flu" or as "bad cold". He took specimens from the throats of patients in his hospital and was able to find the virus of this influenza. There are three main types of the influenza virus. The most important of these are types A and B, each of them having several sub-groups. With the instruments at the hospital the doctor recognized that the outbreak was due to a virus group A, but he did not know the sub-group. He reported the outbreak to the World Health Organization in Geneva. W. H. 0. published the important news alongside reports of a similar outbreak in Hong Kong, where about 15%-20% of the population had become ill. As soon as the London doctors received the package of throat samples, they began the standard tests. They found that by reproducing itself at a very high speed, the virus had multiplied more than a million times within two days. Continuing their careful tests, the doctors checked the effect of drugs used against all the known sub-groups of type A virus on this virus. None of them gave any protection. This then, was something new: a new influenza virus against which the people of the world had no ready help whatsoever. Having isolated the virus they were working with, the two doctors now conducted tests on some specially selected animals, which contract influenza in the same way as human beings do. In a short time the usual signs of the disease appeared. These experiments revealed that the new virus spread easily, but that it was not a killer. Scientists, like general public, called it simply "Asian" flu. The Asian flu virus______.
A:was a killer B:was very weak C:could reproduce very quickly D:died very fast
