The owner of a large company, who was about to take a trip overseas, dropped into his office early in the morning to make some arrangements. He was telephoning for a ticket for his trip when the night watchman came in, who was back from work, and said" Good morning" to the owner. Then he told him that he had dreamed that very night of his employer’s(雇主的)plane crashing(坠毁) after taking off. The owner was surprised to hear this. He decided, however, there was something in what the night watchman said. He postponed(推迟) his trip.
As things turned out, the night watchman’s dream was correct. That day the plane exploded (爆炸) just after leaving the ground. The owner gave the night watchman 5,000 dollars and a letter. He said, "I’m very sorry to do so. But I have to do so. Read the letter when you get home."
The puzzled man hurried home and tore the letter in a hurry. After taking a look, he turned pale. There was only one sentence in it. And he knew that he had been fired.

There have been many great (21) . The first great invention was one that is still very important to day--the wheel. This made it easier to carry (22) things and to travel long distances.
In the early 1800s the world (23) to change. There was little unknown land left in the world. People did not have to explore much any more. They began to work instead to make life belier.
In the second half of the 19th century many great inventions were made. Among them were the camera, the electric light and the radio. These all became a big part (24) our life today.
The first part of the 20th century saw more great inventions: the helicopter in 1909, movies with sound in 1926, the computer in 1928, and jet planes in 1930. This was also a time (25) a new material was first made. Nylon came out in 1935. It changed the kind of clothes people wore.
The middle part of the 20th century brought new ways to help people (26) disease. They worked very well. They made people healthier and let them live (27) lives. By the 1960’s most people could expect to live to be at least 60.
By this time most people had a very good life.’ Of course new inventions continued to be made. Man began (28) ways to go into space. Russia made the first step. Then the United States took a step. Since then other countries, including China and Japan, have made their steps into space.
In 1969 man took his biggest step away from earth. Americans first walked on the moon. This is certainly just a (29) though. New inventions will someday allow us to do things we have never yet (30) .

Have you ever suddenly felt that someone you know was in trouble-and he was Have you ever dreamed something that came true later Maybe you have ESP(超感官知觉).
ESP stands for Extra Sensory Perception. It may be called a sixth sense. It seems to let people know about events before they happen, or events that are happening some distance away.
Here is an example: A woman was doing washing. Suddenly she screamed. "My father is dead! I saw him sitting in the chair!’ Just then, a telegram came. The woman’s father had died of a heart attack. He died sitting in a chair.
There are thousands of stories like this on record. Scientists are studying them to find out what is behind these strange mental messages. Here’s another example--one of hundreds of dreams that have come true.
A man dreamed he was walking along a road when a horse and carriage came by. The driver said, "There’s room for one more." The man felt the driver was Death, so he ran away. The next day the man was getting on a crowded bus. The bus driver said, "There’s room for one more." Then the man saw the driver’s face was the same face he had seen in the dream. He wouldn’t get on the bus. As the bus drove off, it crashed and burst into flames. Everyone was killed!
Some people say stories like these are lies or coincidences. Others, including some scientists say that ESP is true. From studies of ESP, we may some day learn more about the human mind.
In this passage the word "coincidences" probably means ______.
A:things which do not happen B:things which happen by accident without necessary connection C:things which are only dreams D:things dreamed of only by sick people
When I was about six years old, my mother came home one clay and found that I had collected half a dozen babies of the neighborhood-all of them too young to walk-and had them sitting before me on the floor while I was teaching them to wave their arms. When she asked the explanation of this, I informed her that it was my school of dance. She was amused, and placing herself at the piano, she began to play for me. This school continued and became very popular. Later on, little girls of the neighborhood came and their parents paid me a small sum to teach them. This was the beginning of what afterwards proved a very lucrative occupation.
My mother took me to a very famous ballet teacher, but his lessons did not please me. When the teacher told me to stand on my toes I asked him why, and when he replied "because it is beautiful," I said that it was ugly and against nature and after the third lesson I left his class, never to return. This stiff and commonplace gymnastics which he called dancing only disturbed my dream. I dreamed of a different dance. I did not know just what it would be, but I was feeling out towards an invisible world into which I guessed I might enter if I found the key.
My art was already in me when I was a little girl, and it was owing to the heroic and adventurous spirit of my mother that it was not stifled. I believe that whatever the child is going to do in life should begin when it is very young. I wonder how many parents realize that by the so-called education they are giving their children, they are only driving them into the commonplace, and depriving them of any chance of doing anything beautiful or original.
The narrator thought that ballet was ______.
A:the most graceful dance B:stiff, ugly and unnatural C:a dance that she had dreamed of D:an invisible world into which she guessed she might enter
