Passage Two
It all started in wartime Munich when a doctor, Klaus Maertens, had a bad skiing accident. He decided to make himself a comfortable shoe to relieve the pain of walking. Together with a friend, Dr Herbert Funck, he designed a shoe with a special sole.
Soon the two men were selling their product all over Germany, mostly to old women with foot trouble. The medical image lasted until 1959, when Maertens decided to find a company to produce the shoes outside Germany. He contacted R. Griggs & Co, a firm in Northamptonshire (England).
Griggs anglicized the name which became "Dr Martens". The first British boots were made on 1 April 1960 and soon they began to sell quite well.
In the mid-60s the company discovered that their shoes were worn by skinheads. They liked Docs because they wanted to look hard and intimidating. Later, Docs were successful with punks.
Then Doc Martens became the favourite shoes of students all over Britains, and more and more young women began wearing them. Even the police began wearing Docs. At first they came in only two models and two colours. But in the 80s new styles and colours appeared.
Griggs began exporting in 1988, and Docs are now sold all over Europe and the USA. The company employs more than 2,500 people and manufactures 170,000 pairs of Docs a week.

| American Blacks experienced a
revolution after 1945, a revolution in expectations. Following World War Ⅱ, the
steady movement toward first-class citizenship for Black people quickened, with
significant actions taking place in courts of law, in voting booths, in
restaurants and in the streets of the nation. A decade of intense civil rights activity was launched in 1954 when the United States Supreme Court declared segregated schools to be unconstitutional. In 1955, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. , effectively organized the Blacks of Atlanta, Georgia, in a bus boycott. The boycott lasted two years, and when it was over, Blacks no longer were degraded by being forced to sit or stand in the rear of buses. In 1960, a group of Black college students decided that they, sis well as white persons, had the right to eat at a lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina. This sit-in sparked an aggressive national movement and, in the next few years, thousands of young men and women -- Black and white, North and South -- overturned local laws and customs that had maintained segregation. Sit-ins, prayins, freedom rides, freedom marches and demonstrations to open all schools to Black children took place across the nation. |

Home Heating
Central heating became popular only after the Civil War. Typically, coal-burning furnaces (火炉) fueled the early systems. Natural gas had developed into the leading fuel by 1960. Its acceptance resulted in part from its wide uses. Because it comes primarily from U.S. and Canadian fields, natural gas is also less vulnerable (脆弱的) than oil is to war. Oil remains the most important fuel in a few areas, such as New England.
Electric heating dominates most areas with mild winters and cheap electricity, including the South and the Northwest. It was made popular at least in the South by the Iow cost of adding electric heating to new houses built with air-conditioning. Bottled gas, which is somewhat more expensive than utility gas, is the fuel of choice in rural areas not served by utility pipelines. Wood is the leading heating fuel in just a few rural counties.
Home heating, which accounts for less than 7 percent of all energy consumed in the U.S., has had a commendable (值得赞扬的) efficiency record: from 1978 to 1997, the amount of fuel consumed for this purpose declined 44 percent despite a 33 percent increase in the number of housing units and an increase in house size. The U. S. Department of Energy, however, forecasts that energy used in home heating will rise by 14 percent over the next two decades. That rise is small considering an expected 21 percent increase in the number of houses and the trend toward larger houses.
Natural gas and electricity will probably dominate the home heating market for the next two decades. Solar (太阳的) heating never became popular because of cost and limited winter sunlight in most areas; in 2000 only 47, 000 homes relied on it.
