Underground Coal Fires
Coal burning deep underground in China, India and Indonesia is threatening the environment and human life, scientists have warned. These large scale ______ (51) blazes (火焰) cause the ground temperature to heat up and kill surrounding vegetation, produce greenhouse gases and can ______ (52) ignite (点燃) forest fires, a group of scientists told the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Denver . The resulting ______ (53) of poisonous elements like mercury can also pollute local water sources and soils, they warned.
“Coal fires are a global disaster,” said Associate Professor Glenn Stracher of East Georgia Collage in Swainsboro, USA. But ______ (54) few people know about them.
Coal can heat up on its own, and eventually catch fire and burn, if there is a continuous oxygen supply. The heat produced is not caused to ______ (55) and under the right combinations of sunlight and oxygen, can trigger spontaneous (自发的) catching fire and burning . This can occur underground, in coal stockpiles, abandoned mines or even as coal is transported. ______ (56) fires in China consume up to 200 million tons of coal per year, delegates were told. In ______ (57), the U.S economy consumes about one billion tons of coal annually, said Stracher, ______ (58) analysis of the likely impact of coal fires has been accepted for publication in the International Joomal of Acoal Ecology. ______ (59) underway, coal fires can burn for decades, even centuries. In the process, they release large ______ (60) of greenhouse gases, poisonous fumes and black particles into the atmosphere.
The members of the panel discussed the ______ (61) these fires may be having on global and regional climate change, and agreed that the underground nature of the fires makes them difficult to ______ (62).
Ultimately, the remote sensing and other techniques should allow scientists to ______ (63) how much carbon dioxide these fires are emitting (释放) 。 One suggested ______ (64) of containing the fires was presented by Gary Colaizzi, of the engineering firm Goodson, which has developed a heat-resistant grout (灌浆),which is designed to be pumped into the coal fire to ______ (65) the oxygen supply.

? ?{{B}} The Gene Industry{{/B}} ? ?Major companies and
already in pursuit of commercial applications of the new biology. They dream of
placing enzymes in the automobile to monitor exhaust and send data on pollution
to a microprocessor that will then adjust the engine. They speak of what the New
York Times calls "metal-hungry microbes that might be used to mine valuable
trace metals from ocean water". They have already demanded and won the right to
patent new life forms. ? ?Nervous critics, including many
scientists, worry that there is corporate, national, international, and
inter-scientific rivalry in the entire biotechnological field. They create
images not of oil spills, but of "microbe spills" that could spread disease and
destroy entire populations. The creation and accidental release of extremely
poisonous microbes, however, is only one cause for alarm. Completely rational
and respectable scientists are talking about possibilities that stagger the
imagination. ? ?Should we breed people with cow-like stomachs so
they can digest grass and hay, thereby relieving the food problem by modifying
us to eat lower down on the food chain? Should we biologically alter workers to
fit the job requirement, for example, creating pilots with faster reaction times
or assembly-line workers designed to do our monotonous work for us? Should we
attempt to eliminate "inferior" people and breed a" super-race"? (Hitler tried
this, but without the genetic weaponry that may soon issue from our
laboratories.) Should we produce soldiers to do our fighting? Should we use
genetic forecasting to pre-eliminate "unfit" babies? Should we grow reserve
organs for ourselves, each of us having, as it were, a "savings bank" full of
spare kidney, livers or hands? ? ?Wild as these notions may sound,
every one has its advocates (and opposers) in the scientific community as well
as its striking commercial application. As two critics of genetic engineering,
Jeremy Rifkin and Ted Howard, state in their book Who Should Play God? "Broad
Scale genetic engineering will probably be introduced to America much the same
way as assembly lines, automobiles, vaccines, computers and all the other
technologies. As each new genetic advance becomes commercially practical, a new
consumer need will be exploited and a market for the new technology will be
created." |
