What would you do if you could do anything? Makenzie Melton, 9, knows what she'd do: save the rainforest! Her dream, and the amazing drawing she drew to illustrate it, took the top prize in the 2010 Doodle (涂鸦)4 Google national competition.
The annual contest asks kids in grades K-12 to use their imaginations to create a new design for the search engine's familiar logo (徽标).The winning doodle was revealed during a special ceremony at the Google offices in New York City.
Makenzie' s colorful entry beat out more than 33,000 artworks. Today, the third- grader' s design appears front and center on GooglE.com for millions of people to seE.
The contest centered on the theme, "If I Could Do Anything, I WoulD." Entries poured in from all over the country. The artwork expressed a wide range of visions. Kids wished for everything from finding a cure for cancer to building a playground in ‘outer spacE.
The title of Makenzie' s colored -pencil creation is "Rainforest Habitat". She writes: "I chose this doodle because the rainforest is in danger and it is not fair to the plants and animals. I love everything except spiders and snakes, but would still save them."
Makenzie, who wants to be an art teacher when she grows up, says she drew four different drafts of her doodle before turning in the one she liked best. When Makenzie was announced as the grand-prize winner, she gave her mom a huge hug before tearfully accepting the award onstagE. "It was so exciting! “ Makenzie saiD.
Her parents, Tammy Marie Melton and Scott Melton, were equally thrilleD. "You
hope and believe and want, " said Tammy. "Then when it happens, it's still unbelievable! ” Makenzie won a $15,000 college scholarship, a trip to the Google offices in New York City and a new laptop computer. Her school, El Dorado SpringsR.-2 Schools, in El Dorado Springs,. Missouri, received a $25,000 technology grant (拨款).
